Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is often referred to as a partial denture. The bridge term is derived from “bridging” a gap of one or more teeth in either the top or bottom arch of the mouth. A bridge is one cost-effective option for filling those gaps.
A bridge is sculpted to look like natural teeth and has the durability needed for day-to-day life. The replacement tooth (or teeth) is attached to a gum or pink-colored base, usually with a metal framework. The framework is attached to abutting teeth for more stability. Caring for a bridge is as easy as routine brushing.
The dentists and staff at Pine Forest Family Dentistry can help you decide which type of bridge is best for you. There are four types available:
Traditional
Implant-supported
Cantilever
Maryland
Bridges will help prevent the loss of bone volume caused by missing teeth. Bone begins to reabsorb into the body If a tooth is not replaced (up to 25% in the first year). Bone loss continues to progress around where the teeth are missing, causing the facial structures and muscles to collapse, causing the shrunken-in appearance of people with many missing teeth.
The pressure created by teeth in the jawbone when chewing maintains bone density. A bridge placed over a gap in teeth helps recreate this pressure.
