Tooth Extraction

Accidental injuries, disease, or decay can lead to the need to remove a tooth. Teeth sometimes need to be removed to make room for other teeth to move into a better position (such as when applying braces).

Removing a tooth is avoided if possible, but if required, it’s not as scary as it sounds. Modern advancements in dental anesthetics have made extractions more tolerable. The worst of the entire procedure should be the initial pinch of the anesthetic injection. Even that pinch is dulled by the administration of a topical anesthetic on the gum where the injection will be made.

The dentist allows the anesthetic some time to take effect in the area of the extraction to ensure total comfort. If any pain is felt after the procedure has begun, you should immediately make it known, so more anesthetic can be administered. The extraction should be a totally painless procedure. You will only feel pressure in the jaw and hear the sounds associated with the extraction.

The tooth is then gently rocked back and forth to try to remove it in one piece. If it breaks, it will require removal in pieces, making the extraction last a little longer.

The staff at Pine Forest Dentistry strive to make extractions as pain-free as possible.
